Text Messaging While Driving An Increasing Cause of Serious Auto Accidents

It’s no surprise that numerous studies have shown that text messaging while driving greatly increases your risk of serious auto accidents. One such study finds that a person driving while texting is six times more likely to be involved in a automobile accident. It was also revealed that teen drivers texting while driving has increased to the point that it has become the top distraction for teen drivers even more than driving while speaking on cell phones.

Statistics alone do not tell the full story. Recenty two stories illustrate the dangers of texting while driving for both the general public and the distraced driver. First, a December trial highlighted the dangers of being in a car wreck while texting. In Massachusetts a man is on trial after stricking and killing a teen on a bicycle while the man was driving and typing a text message. The driver thought he hit a mailbox and didn’t realize his SUV had struck the boy unitl he drove back down the street several hours later to go to work.

In late February, A Missouri television station wanted to show just how dangerous is by asked teen drivers to drive through a closed course while text messaging. The resulting video was a far more effective example of how badly a distracted driver performs while texting.

And if studies and videos of teens butchering a driving course while texting don’t get your attention perhaps the report of a driver who was texting and crashed into a police patrol car will.
